Environmental Pollution: Osun is better off than many States – Environment Commissioner, Adejoorin

The Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Mayowa Adejoorin has refuted the insinuations that the state capital is the dirtiest city in Nigeria.

Hon. Adejoorin made this assertion today on a radio phone-in live program, Frank Talk on Rave FM, Osogbo.

According to Hon Adejoorin, “I travelled to Ibadan and Abeokuta recently to confer with the Honourable Commissioners for Environment of Oyo and Ogun state Governments on common matters related to our official duties and what I saw in those states confirmed that Osun State is better off in the management of the sanitation of the state.

Hon. Adejoorin therefore lamented the attitude of our people who are hell bent on keeping the streets and our drainage dirty, adding that “the attitude of our people has to change and they must learn how to properly dispose of their refuse.”

He said “the Osun State government is a friendly one who believes people should be treated with dignity” which is why the environment officers are lenient with environmental offenders.

Hon. Adejoorin however, warned that the government may have to reinforce the laws that are associated with the weekly and monthly sanitation exercise and bring them back if our people refuse to obey the laws without the government using iron hands on them.

Hon. Adejoorin therefore appealed to the citizens to play their roles at ensuring that they cooperate with environmental officers with a view to warding off diseases associated with dirtiness, open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
