FUOYE Vice-Chancellor Highlights Achievements, Calls for University Autonomy

The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof Abayomi Sunday Fasina passionately addressed a distinguished audience during the Annual Leadership Retreat organized by the Division of Student’s Affairs.

The retreat was held at Western Sun International Hotel, in Ede on Monday

Expressing his pleasure at the occasion, Prof. Fasina emphasized the practical significance of the Leadership Retreat, aiming to instill high moral values in the student body.

“It gives me great pleasure addressing you this afternoon on the occasion of the annual Leadership Retreat organized for both arms of the SUG.

” The Retreat, in practical sense is aimed at inculcating high moral values and ethics in the leadership of our student body. This, it is hope, will cascade to the generality of the students of the University. This has formed the dialectic of our peaceful academic activities, culminating in FUOYE being the fastest growing university in Nigeria. He stated.

Reflecting on his tenure, Prof. Fasina proudly noted the exponential growth in student population, reaching 55,000 and making FUOYE the 4th most subscribed university in Nigeria. He underscored the need to engage students constructively, fostering a progressive change that aligns with the university’s vision.

“Since assuming office as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor, the student population growth has peaked at 55,000 so much so that today, from the statistics obtainable from JAMB 2023, FUOYE is the 4th most subscribed to University in Nigeria.

“This year alone, over fifty-five thousand candidates applied to FUOYE. What this implies is that we are a vibrant brand and the virile youth population of Nigeria readily identify with us.

“Looking back, it is instructive, in my estimation and clarity of perspective that we need to properly orientate the students on the need to engage management constructively and to be the vanguard of the progressive change they all desire

The Vice-Chancellor then detailed the university’s outstanding achievements over the years, ranging from staff welfare initiatives to academic excellence and infrastructural development.

Notable accomplishments include the establishment of FUOYE MICROFINANCE, hosting NUC Accreditation Teams, and the successful Convocation for 2022 and 2023.

Prof. Fasina expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the removal of tertiary institutions from IPPIS, hailing it as a positive impact on tertiary education.

He, however, urged ASUU to engage in constructive dialogues for the benefit of its members.

“I will like to appeal to ASUU to be more readily disposed to constructive engagements with the Stakeholders such that much more welfare packages would come to its members.

” What the committee of the Vice-Chancellors achieved in terms of exit from the IPPISS and the reversal of the proposed 40% IGR remittance is a lesson in diplomacy and tact for ASUU. Chinua Achebe’s time honored words are instructive “even when there was disagreement, one had to be disconcordant with respect”.

The Vice-Chancellor continued by appealing to the Federal Government to expedite the process of granting universities more autonomy, allowing Governing Councils to take full charge of administration.
