Gov. Adeleke Provides Free Eye Care for 42,000 Osun Students

In a significant stride towards enhancing child healthcare, over 42,000 schoolchildren across Osun State have benefited from the free eye screening, treatment, and management initiative launched by the state government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The initiative, tagged the Imole Eye Health Programme, was spearheaded by the Osun State Health Insurance Agency (OSHIA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. It aims to improve eye health among schoolchildren through free eye examinations, provision of eyeglasses, medications, and surgical interventions where necessary.

Prior to receiving treatment, beneficiaries underwent comprehensive eye screening in their respective schools. Students diagnosed with refractive errors were provided with prescription glasses, while those requiring medical intervention received necessary medications and surgeries.

Speaking on the impact of the programme, the Executive Secretary of OSHIA, Dr. Rasaq Akindele, expressed satisfaction with the overwhelming participation, noting that the initial target of 25,000 students was significantly exceeded, with over 42,000 students ultimately benefiting from the initiative.

“I’m truly impressed by the turnout. As of midday, we had already distributed about 500 Imole glasses, and the exercise is ongoing simultaneously across multiple zones, including Ede, Ikirun, Iwo, and Ila,” Dr. Akindele said.

He emphasized that the programme was designed to prevent, reduce, and reverse avoidable blindness among children in the state. He also commended parents for allowing their children to participate, underscoring the urgent need for such interventions.

“This exercise has revealed that many students are struggling with eye conditions that require attention. We are committed to ensuring that every diagnosed child receives the necessary care,” he assured.

Expressing their gratitude, two beneficiaries, Adetunji Favour and Shuaib Nafisat, thanked Governor Adeleke for prioritizing the well-being of Osun’s children. They also prayed for divine blessings upon the governor for his unwavering commitment to their health and education.

This initiative underscores Governor Adeleke’s dedication to improving healthcare access for young citizens, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Osun’s children.
