Indiscriminate dumping of refuse: Defaulters arrested in Osogbo, to be fined

The Environmental Health Department of Osun State Waste Management Agency earlier today engaged on Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance around Akindeko market area of Osogbo at 6:00am.

The Surveillance team was led by Sanitarian Hassan Akeem Olawale together with Sanitarian Oderinde Temidayo, Sanitarian Adegbesan Adewumi, Sanitarian Akindele Ridwan.

Others are, Sanitarian Ramon Kudirat, Sanitarian Ramon Mujidat, Sanitarian Olatoye Basirat, Sanitarian Owoeye Ayodele, Sanitarian Opekilede Funmi, Sanitarian Agunbiade Irewumi, Sanitarian Ajala Yetunde and Sanitarian Anwo Sunday Adedeji.

The purpose of the Surveillance is to curb the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road median and other non approved sites by the state government, which the members of the public engage in.

Some of the defaulters who brought vehicles to bring their waste from their various homes were arrested and were taken to the Agency for proper profiling and charges.

It has been noted that the residents of the area are found dumping refuse on the road median, most especially the market women and men and those living in the neighborhood.

Speaking, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin warned those who engage in dumping refuse on road median to desist, as anyone caught will be dealt with according to the provisions of the law.

He stated, “I have directed that the Environmental Health Department to arrest anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately and should be made to face the full wrath of law.

“We have the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) who engage in collecting refuse from households, they go to streets to collect the refuse. Individuals are expected to make use of these people instead of dumping the refuse on our major roads. This must stop.” He declared.
