OPINION: Clarion Call On Nigeria Government To Tackle Homosexual

The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill was signed into law on January 7, 2014, by President Goodluck Jonathan. The law imposes a 14-year prison sentence on anyone who enters into a same-sex marriage contract or civil union,” and a 10-year sentence on individuals or groups, including religious leaders, who “witness, abet, and aid the solemnization of a same-sex marriage or union.” It imposes a 10-year prison sentence on those who “directly or indirectly make a public show of a same-sex amorous relationship” and anyone who “registers, operates, or participates in gay clubs, societies, and organizations,” including supporters of those groups.

The Nigerian Senate approved the bill on November 29, 2011, and the House of Representatives passed it on its third and final reading in May 2013. A “harmonization committee” finalized the bill in December, preparing the way for President Jonathan’s signature.

The rate at which homosexuality increases in Nigeria calls for worry, and all hands must be on deck to check it, most especially within the young demography.

I could recollect in August 2023, Sixty-seven (67) suspects were arrested by the Delta State Police Command for the alleged practice of homosexuality.

The suspects were apprehended in a hotel along Refinery Road in the Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

The police spokesman said the suspects would be charged in court upon completion of the investigation. Up till now, we’ve not heard anything regarding the case.

Also, a report was filed against Mr Oyebisi Rasaq Kolawole 42, on August 30, 2023, and Lagos State police command declared him and his partner Rasheed Omilana 41 “wanted” and we are still waiting for the outcome of the investigation.

Another reported case was in the news of Mr Murisiq Bolaji Ayuba 39 and his gay partner Sule Arowolo 37 who was arrested and declared Mr Murisiq Bolaji Ayuba wanted by Lagos State Police Command after a series of invitations to come and clear his name.

Recently, an Islamic organisation wrote a petition to the Nigeria police to act and investigate one Mr Olaosebikan Musefiu 39, on homosexual practice after his partner was arrested by the Lagos state police command and confessed. It was claimed that Mr Olaosebikan Musefiu is the secretary of the organisation, and it’s against the doctrine of Islam and also against the Nigerian constitution.

These are the cases before the Nigeria Police and many more. We implore Nigeria police to act on these cases and bring them to justice to serve as detriment of other homosexual practitioners in Nigeria.

It is imperative that the Nigeria police and the federal government need to, as a matter of duty, enforce the law prohibiting homosexuality in the country. Let the offenders who have been investigated face the music as this will serves as deterrent to others.

As the menace spreads in the society today, most especially, within our younger ones in the country, it’s important that parents and guardians look after their children. Also, parents/guardians should report any act of homosexuality to the appropriate quarters so as to curb the spread of the menace in the society.
