The management of University of Ilesa has matriculated the new students of the University for the 2024/2025 session.
The matriculation ceremony was held at the University’s Multipurpose Hall on Wednesday.
While speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Ashaolu admonished the newly admitted students to desist from any anti-social behaviours capable of disrupting the smooth running of the university.
Encouraging the matriculated students, he urged them to pursue success in their respective fields and utilize their time wisely.
His speech
It is with great pleasure that I joyfully welcome you all to this auspicious occasion, which is the second matriculation ceremony taking place on the soil of our nascent but visibly growing University, the University of Ilesa, Ilesa, Osun State. I said auspicious because when we started about 18 months ago, it was like a child’s play in the eyes of many people, but today as we can all see, University of Ilesa, Ilesa has come to stay.
Matriculation ceremony is an occasion at which freshly-admitted students of an Institution of Higher Learning are officially accepted as members of the University community. It is also an occasion where freshly-admitted students of an Institution inwardly heave sighs of relief that they had conquered the almighty Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as it were.
Congratulations
My dear young students, by passing the different examinations set by the JAMB for the different disciplines into which you have been offered admission into our University, you have successfully taken your destinies in your own hands and to their next level, and on that note, I wish to salute and warmly congratulate you on your efforts and achievements thus far. But then, that is the very beginning of the long journey towards your better life in future. May I also seize this opportunity to welcome and also congratulate your Parents and Guardians who are here present on their onerous duty of guiding, guarding, molding and sponsoring your educational pursuits up to this point. Your efforts will not be in vain.
Understanding Your New Environment
There is no doubt that being offered admission into the University of Ilesa brings you to a totally new environment. This is because the University of Ilesa and/or any other University for that matter, is a rule-ordered environment where you will all be guided, all through your stay here as students, by well-tested academic principles, norms, procedures, rules and regulations to help you achieve your individual aims and objectives which will be narrowed down to a singular goal – that of graduating from this University with a good honours degrees.
In order to achieve the foregoing, the University on its part, has provided adequate facilities (physical and e-libraries, books, lecture halls, laboratories) and other items of equipment that will enhance teaching and learning in serene, peaceful and conductive atmosphere. Hence, the core values of the University are “Insight with Integrity”, “Loyalty with Liberty”, “Enterprise with Excellence”, “Skills with Soundness” and “Candour with Audacity” all of which project the vision of the University “to become a foremost University contributing to sustainable national development and be globally relevant.”
Registration, Orientation and Matriculation
Dear Matriculants, I am convinced that you have already begun your process of socialisation and acculturation into the University of Ilesa norms which started with your registration exercise as well as your participation in the week-long orientation programmes. Hence, your matriculation today is simply the icing on the cake of your full absorption into the hallowed culture of our University. It is therefore expected that you would have completed all registration processes by now, because today’s matriculation ceremony brings to an end all admission processes. Let me, however, advise that any of you who is yet to complete his/her registration process due to one genuine reason or the other, should quickly see his/her Head of Department or Dean of Faculty and/or the Director, Information Communications Technology (ICT), as the case may be, with a view to resolving whatever is left for the registration process to complete. Doing this will help you to avoid falling into the hands of unscrupulous elements otherwise known as scammers, who would be ready to offer unsolicited assistance to you with the aim of defrauding you as innocent and unsuspecting fresh students.
Attendance at Lectures
No student ever obtains any degree from any University without first attending lectures whether physically or online and writing all prescribed examinations. In other words, students’ attendance at lectures, tutorials and practical classes are compulsory and should therefore be taken seriously. This is because no student of this University will be allowed to write semester examinations without recording a minimum of 75% lecture attendance, which forms part of the examination mark. In the same vein, dutiful participation in all forms of “Continuous Assessment” is of great importance, as no student should toy with it.
Sporting Activities
The welfare and safety of both staff and students as well as other members of the University community are of paramount importance to the University Management. To this end, Management has put in place reasonable safety measures to ensure that every member of the University community plies his/her trade in the atmosphere of peace and safety. This has been done through the upgrading and equipping the University’s security outfit with modern security apparatus as well as collaboration with other security agencies outside the University system.
Furthermore, the University Management subscribes to the scientific maxim that says physical exercise goes a long to develop the mental and emotional stability of mankind. In view of this, the University Management has provided and is still providing various types of sporting facilities and equipment for the benefit of its staff, students, as well as members of the University’s immediate community.
For example, let me inform you that, with the support of the University Management, our 200 level students’ athletes participated in the year 2024 “Intercollegiate Sports Competition” and they won medals in the different sporting events that they took part in. It is also worthy to mention here that one of our 200 level students, Mr. David Oluwaseun Ajibola of the Department of Anatomy, had earlier blazed the trail of winning laurels at competitions by representing Osun State at the National Sewing Competition held at Abuja on 7th September, 2024 and coming home with a bronze medal. I therefore seize this opportunity to enjoin anyone of you who has a mind to excel in any sporting activity or skill development to go and register appropriately with the University’s Agency in order to have the right and proper opportunity to showcase his/her talents.
As veritable agents of character molding, the University of Ilesa does not frown at its students being members of religious and other social groups on campus. However, students are advised to ensure that they enlist into the membership of only groups that are duly registered with the Directorate of Student Affairs of the University and be acquainted with the rules and regulations governing the activities of such groups, societies or associations, because any group that fails to comply with such regulations will be sanctioned in line with appropriate laws of the University.
