Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-political organisation of the Igbo people, says it will not congratulate President-elect Bola Tinubu just yet.
Damian Okeke-Ogene, Ohanaeze’s national Vice President, explained that they cannot do so until the court process has been concluded.
In a statement on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Mr Okeke-Ogene expressed, “Ohanaeze is not in a hurry to recognise Tinubu as the President-elect because any house built on a faulty foundation is bound to collapse.”
He further added, “We believe that the process of the 2023 presidential election is still ongoing. The voting has been completed, and the court has taken over. Until the outcome of the court process is known, we cannot take a stance on the 2023 election.”
The outcome of the February 25 presidential election is currently being contested at the Presidential Election Tribunal by Labour Party’s Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Messrs Obi and Abubakar are arguing that Mr Tinubu was not duly nominated by APC and that electoral body INEC contravened its own laws in returning the APC candidate as president-elect.
Meanwhile, preparations are ongoing for the handover of power to Mr Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima, on May 29.
