Yesterday was the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).
The annual observance of the day was proclaimed in 1992 by United Nations General Assembly resolution. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
According to the United Nations, the world’s population today is estimated around 8 billion people and more than one billion, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some forms of disability; 80 per cent live in developing countries, including Nigeria.
In line with this and in his characteristic manner, Representative Bamidele Salam, the lawmaker representing Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, Ejigbo federal constituency in the national assembly, rolled out the drums to celebrate this class of people in his federal constituency.
In celebrating the day, Rep Bamidele Salam announced the appointment of 8 persons as his Special Advisers. The appointees are to be nominated by Association of Persons with Disabilities and will be drawn in each of the four local governments in the federal constituency.
Again, varying categories of empowerment gestures were also extended to them to mark the special day . Many who are into fashion designing were supported with standard sewing machines. Many went home with grinding machines (based on request). Micro traders among them also went home with cash grants to boost their businesses, hair dryers for hairdressers and lots more.
As usual, the beneficiaries showered praises and prayers on Rep Bamidele Salam for identifying with them always and particularly on the day set aside the world over to honor them. They described the lawmaker as God sent in the lives of physically challenged persons in the federal constituency and Osun State at large.
The colorful event was witnessed by the wife of the lawmaker, Mrs Oluwaseyi Salam, who is also the Matron of Association of Persons with disabilities in the federal constituency, PDP chairmen in Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo, making up the federal constituency, communities leaders, as well as representatives of leadership of Association of Persons with disabilities in Osun State.
